The Antigonish Multisport Pilot program, which will run from September until June, is a collaboration between 10 community sport organizations, town and county recreation, Sport Nova Scotia, StFX Athletics and Recreation and the Department of Health and Wellness.Stephanie Spencer, Sport Nova Scotia Highland Region Community Sport Development Coordinator, said this is a pilot project.”Something like this has not been done before,” Spencer said.”We’re reaching outside the typical box of sport delivery to provide an opportunity for children to participate in a quality multisport experience with a physical literacy focus.”Spencer said each lesson focuses on developing physical literacy through skill development and fun, setting the ground work for a love of sport and an ‘I can play anything’ attitude.Physical literacy comes from developing a wide variety of fundamental movement skills such as running, throwing, catching and jumping. To develop these skills, children need to play different sports and activities from an early age. Spencer said physical literacy makes helps kids stay active, happy and healthy.”We want children to experience all types of sport and build a wide base of fundamental movement skills,” Spencer said.”The confidence and competence gained in having these skills will allow a child to continue to be active in numerous ways throughout their lifetime, which is really the end goal.”Spencer said the beginning of the idea of Antigonish Multisport originated a year ago at the Community Sport Summit hosed by Sport Nova Scotia. She noted her job focuses on building relationships with community sport organizations and stakeholders to develop quality sport in alignment with Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L).
